Introduction

All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is the apex institute of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. It is a centre for rehabilitation of persons with locomotor problems, an educational institute for training manpower in the field of medical rehabilitation and a centre for research in disability rehabilitation. The institute was established in November 1955 as a joint pilot project of Govt. of Bombay, Govt. of India and United Nations Organisation. In 1961, the Institute came under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.



Scope of services

  • To provide preventive, therapeutic and comprehensive rehabilitation services to persons with locomotor problems like persons with chronic illnesses (stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, chronic pains etc.), elderly, congenital anomalies, and persons with other locomotor disabilities. The services include medical and surgical treatment, rehabilitation therapies, vocational guidance & training, and social support.
  • Teaching and training for development of trained manpower for medical rehabilitation Postgraduate courses – Seven (7)- (MD- PMR, MPTh, MPO, MOTh, FCRS, FCRPT, FCROT) Undergraduate courses -1 course (BPO) Diploma course - DHLS
  • Research in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and allied rehabilitation fields.
  • Outreach activities in Mumbai and other districts of Maharashtra. Sometimes extended to other states as well

The institute is the first to start the following in India:

  • Medical speciality of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • Allied rehabilitation field of Prosthetics and orthotics and related training courses (Certificate, Diploma, Graduate, Postgraduate)
  • Post-graduate Diploma / Fellowship in Rehabilitation in Physiotherapy/ Occupational therapy
  • Fellowship in Rehabilitation Surgery. The quality of work being done by the institute has led WHO to send trainees in the field of disability rehabilitation from countries like North Korea, Myanmar, Tajikistan etc. to the institute. The institute has implemented many outreach projects in collaboration with non-government organizations & International agencies viz. W.H.O.
