Central Research Institute (CRI) was established on 3rd May 1905 as Pasteur Institute for North India. It is a subordinate office of the Directorate General of Health Services, under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. Ever since its inception, it has been continuously serving the nation by providing health security by producing and supplying life-saving Vaccines and Antisera. The Institute made a remarkable supply of vaccines and Antisera products to the Indian Army during World War II. The vision of the Institute is to strengthen the health security policy of Govt. of India.



Physical Infrastructure:

Land Area: : The estate of CRI Kasauli consists of 67 Acres of land in four parts situated within a radius of 1.5. Kms. The reference areas : (are (i) Manufacturing wing, (ii) R&T wing, (iii) Drum-bar Estate, and (iv) Belvedere Estate. CRI Kasauli has a residential accommodation facility.



Mandate

  • Research on problems of medical and public health.
  • Manufacture of vaccine and antisera Teaching and Training in Microbiology Act as National Reference Center for Public Health Problems


Functions & Activities

  • Production:DPT group of Vaccines (DTP & Td vaccines) Antisera production (ASVS, ARS, DATS & TATS) Yellow fever vaccine (imported from WHO) – For supply to various YF vaccination centers across India including CRI Kasauli. Diagnostic Reagents: Antigens for Salmonella and Weil-Felix, sera of Salmonella & Vibrio cholera
  • Quality Control Division: Ensuring quality in raw materials, intermediates, and final products.
  • Animal House Facility: Breeding facility for mice & guinea pigs and Drumbar Horse stables.
  • Academics: M.Sc. (Microbiology) course (affiliated with Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla) One-year diploma in Vaccine production and Lab animal care under the skill development Programme of Govt. of India One Year Post Graduate Diploma Course in Vaccinology and Immunobiologicals (Affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla) Short-term training programs in the field of Microbiology & Biotechnology.
  • Surveillance Division: National Polio Lab., Influenza Lab, Zika & COVID Lab, National Salmonella & E. coli Centre, and Rabies Research Centre.
  • Medical Facilities: Treatment Centre, Clinical Diagnostic Lab. and Yellow fever vaccination center.
  • Establishment: Administration Section, Rajbhasha, Accounts & Bills, Stores and General Supervision
  • Ancillary Facilities: Utilities, Workshop, Central Sterilization & Media Section, Stock & Supply, Printing press: Provides the printing services.
