The Regional Leprosy Training & Research Institute, (RLTRI, Aska) was started by “DANISH SAVE THE CHILDREN” a voluntary organization of Denmark in the year 1968 for doing Leprosy control work. The Institute was taken over by Government of Orissa in 1972 and then by Govt.of India in 1977. Since then, the Institute has been functioning as a subordinate office of the Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare,GOI.The Institute is located in Babanpur Village, Aska block of Ganjam district at a distance of 170 kms south of Bhubaneswar City(capital city & nearest airport),45 kms from Berhampur (nearest railway station) and 05 kms from Aska bus terminus (near Aska sugar mill). It is spread over an area of 15 acres accommodating a 50 bedded hospital along with training & administration block.
The scope of work of RLTRI,Aska typically includes to provide basic and specialized diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitation and referral services to leprosy affected patients, to train healthcare professionals to build capacity both at state & national Level, to implement National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP),to monitor and supervise the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) implementation,to undertake research in basic & operational aspects for eradication of Leprosy.To function as a nodal centre for promoting anti- leprosy activities in the country, in collaboration with government and non-government organizations.
In addition to its core functions, RLTRI,Aska being part of Central Leprosy Division (CLD) coordinates with 7 alloted States / UT's (Andhra pradesh,Telangana,Odisha,Bihar, Uttar pradesh,Uttarakhand, Daman & Diu) for proper implementation of NLEP programme. Faculty being one of the national trainer, takes part in SLO's training by CLD/WHO from time to time. As directed by CLD, faculty of this institute participate in various national level meetings & supervision exercises, being member of JMM, central Monitor for LCDC for different states, SPARSH etc. Being a member of TRG (Technical Research Group) of CLD, participates in the meetings both virtual / physical for different issues of NLEP. Besides this institute participate in various virtual /physical meetings conducted by CLD /Ministry. A pilot study of drug delivery to remote places by drone services was successfully carried out in the institute.
